Bespoke Mosaic & Tile Sourcing for Interior Designers

Project Brief

Macfarlane Van der Heul, a London-based interior design studio, commissioned a bespoke entrance mosaic for a prestigious Mapesbury property. The objective was clear: create an entry floor that felt refined, architectural, and immediately impactful without being overly ornate.

Design Direction

The typography element became the focal point of the concept. We presented two layout options, numeric and lettered. After review, the team selected a sleek, lettered composition featuring bold sans serif forms. The revised design introduced a slimmer surrounding frame to maintain proportion and visual balance within the entrance footprint.

Material Selection

We specified Crema Marfil marble for warmth and Nero Marquina marble for contrast, creating a timeless black-and-white foundation. To elevate the design, brass inlay accents were incorporated, introducing subtle reflectivity and depth while maintaining understated luxury.

Fabrication Techniques

The marble background was hand-cut and assembled in a fish scale pattern, ensuring fluid movement beneath the typographic centerpiece. For the lettering and brass detailing, precision waterjet cutting was used to achieve crisp edges and exact fitment. This hybrid approach hand craftsmanship with modern fabrication, ensured both artistry and technical accuracy.

Installation Coordination

After final approval, the mosaic was carefully packaged and shipped to London. Detailed layout specifications supported seamless on-site installation by Blockhouse Build, ensuring the brass inlay and marble typography aligned precisely within the entrance floor.

Project Outcome

The completed mosaic transformed the entrance into a sophisticated focal point. The interplay of black and white marble with brass accents delivers a balanced composition classic in palette, modern in execution. The result is a typographic floor plaque that feels permanent, architectural, and tailored to its setting.

Project Brief

A custom marble floral mosaic was commissioned for the Lulu & Georgia showroom in California. Designed in collaboration with Kevin Klein Design, the objective was to create a 200 sq ft entry foyer feature that would immediately reflect the brand’s refined yet modern design identity.

Design Evolution

The project initially began as a checkerboard marble layout using Crema Marfil and black marble. Shortly after, the direction shifted toward a botanical composition in sage green and cream tones.

Our design studio refined the original concept by correcting vine flow, improving symmetry, and adjusting foliage density to ensure the pattern translated accurately into natural stone. Multiple 2D layouts and 3D visualizations were created to finalize proportion, border structure, and logo placement before production.

Material Selection

The final palette featured Cedar Green marble paired with polished cream marble base tiles. The “Lulu & Georgia” logo was rendered in precision-cut brass inlay. Material selection focused on tonal balance, durability for high-traffic showroom use, and long-term visual consistency under interior lighting conditions.

Fabrication Strategy

Each floral element was hand-cut in marble and assembled into installation-ready panels. Vine thickness was carefully adjusted for structural integrity, ensuring accurate stone cutting without compromising detail. Brass lettering was waterjet cut to achieve clean edges and seamless integration within the marble field.

Installation Coordination

Panels were sectioned, mapped, and prepared for efficient on-site installation. Every component was labeled to align precisely within the 200 sq ft entry layout. Pre-approved renderings and shop drawings ensured no resizing or field adjustments were required during placement.

Project Outcome

The completed mosaic transformed the showroom entrance into a defining architectural statement. The sage green floral composition brings movement and softness, while the brass logo inlay adds brand presence without overpowering the space. The result is a custom marble floor that feels calm, elevated, and fully integrated into Lulu & Georgia’s interior identity.
