This exquisite mosaic mural, designed for Michelle Benedito’s home, is a heartfelt tribute to one of the most poetic verses from the Bible – Song of Solomon 2:1. The verse, “I am the rose of Sharon and the lily of the valleys,” served as both the emotional and aesthetic foundation for the piece, reflecting not only Michelle’s faith but her love for timeless beauty and symbolic artistry. Set in a radiant gold-foil border and centered with elegantly rendered white lilies, this mural now graces her home as a backsplash; a sacred, artful space that merges scripture with luxury design.
Original Vision and Design Inspiration
Michelle approached MEC with a deeply personal vision: to create a piece that evokes spiritual depth while harmonizing with her home’s warm and opulent interiors. She also found inspiration in a vintage mirror she owned, which featured a lavish gold trim. That very mirror became the reference point for the mural’s shimmering gold border – a design detail that would frame the entire piece in a halo of light.
The lilies, central to the verse and the mural, were a focal point. Not just any lilies, but a harmonious blend of multiple varieties chosen and refined over multiple discussions with Michelle, to embody both symbolism and beauty. Colour Palette and Typography Font Selection
The foundation of the mural was built around a carefully curated color palette, chosen to reflect both spiritual symbolism and visual elegance:
- Gold Foil Tiles for the border: Reflective, elegant, and regal – these tiles were inspired by a vintage mirror in Michelle’s home, bringing a sense of luxury and warmth to the entire mural.
- Soft White and Cream Mosaic Pieces for the lilies: Symbolizing purity and spiritual bloom, these tones gave the lilies a delicate, radiant presence at the heart of the mural.
- Earthy Neutrals and Subtle Greens for the background and foliage: These tones provided natural grounding and balance, allowing the central floral elements to stand out while maintaining an overall softness and cohesion.
- Lavender Branches in Purple and Blue: Gentle touches of lavender added calm, serenity, and a graceful coolness to the piece, enhancing the botanical theme with layered beauty.
- Blossoming Petals in Shades of Red and Pink: Introduced to add vibrancy and contrast, these subtle pops of color brought a lively, blooming effect to the composition – injecting energy without overpowering the mural’s elegance.
As part of the design process for Michelle’s mural, special attention was given to the typography of the verse – a detail that would carry both aesthetic and spiritual significance. Three distinct font samples were presented to Michelle for review. Each font offered a different tone: one more traditional and script-like, another modern and refined, and the third with a classic serif elegance. This allowed Michelle to explore how the words would visually settle into the artwork.
Finalizing the Details and Dimensions
With Michelle’s vision at the center, our design team went through several iterations to ensure the final render was nothing short of perfect. For Michelle, multiple iterations of the lily patterns and designs were presented, with distinct petals and shapes from each draft, which were then artistically merged into a single, unified floral design.
Each tile was hand-picked not just for color, but for texture, reflectivity, and harmony within the overall composition. Measuring 2 feet 4.5 inches wide and 6 feet 10.25 inches tall, this vertically oriented mural makes a striking impact within a compact footprint. Due to space limitations, we had to artistically reduce the scripture to fit, while still preserving its spiritual and poetic essence. Our collaborative approach meant every decision – from the curve of a petal to the angle of a letter – was refined and re-approved.
Insights Into Production and Fabrication
Once the render was finalized, production began in our studio – where precision and control define every step. Our skilled artisans meticulously translated the digital render into reality. Each piece was laid with intention, ensuring flow, harmony, and impeccable craftsmanship. The gold foil tiles were treated with extra care to retain their reflective brilliance and avoid any tarnishing or misalignment. This wasn’t just another mosaic – it was a spiritual centerpiece brought to life through time-honored craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
