Superyacht Design Meets Mosaic Art

Working alongside a yacht design studio with roots in Bath and London, we had the opportunity to take one of our existing designs, the Kosmik motif, and translate it into a completely new setting.

H3 went on to receive the Best in Refit award at the 2024 International Superyacht Society Design & Leadership Awards, which made being part of the project even more special for our studio.

More than anything, it was an honour to see our mosaic become part of a yacht so carefully considered in every detail.

It also opened up a new avenue for us — showing just how naturally mosaic can move beyond the spaces we traditionally associate it with and into the highly specialised world of superyacht design.

Superyachts today are increasingly designed around experience, with greater attention given to wellness, outdoor living and highly personalised interiors.

H3 is a strong example of this shift: its major refit extended the yacht by 10 metres and introduced a new pool and beach club, combining design, engineering and functionality. It went on to win Best in Refit at the 2024 International Superyacht Society Design & Leadership Awards.

For us, it was exciting to see where mosaic could sit within this world

Translating Kosmik for a Superyacht

For us, bespoke design does not always mean starting from a blank page.

With H3, Kosmik became the foundation for something new.

Our designers adapted the composition and colour distribution to respond to the yacht and its pool. That process of adapting an existing artwork to a new architectural context is one of the parts of the project our studio enjoyed most.

Designing a mosaic for a superyacht pool comes with a different set of considerations. The mosaic has to sit within a much larger design language — working alongside the yacht’s deck, architecture, materials and interiors.

H3 is a good example of this approach. Its 2023 rebuild added a new aft pool and beach club, with the pool designed with a floor that can rise and transform the area into a dance floor.

For our team, this meant thinking about Kosmik as part of the yacht rather than as a standalone artwork. At this scale, every section needs to connect with the next so that the radial composition reads as one continuous design across the pool.
It was a different way of thinking about a pool mosaic — one where the artwork had to respondto the movement, architecture and multiple uses of the yacht around it.

Taking Kosmik from a digital design to a finished pool involved several stages.

We first adapted the artwork to the dimensions and requirements of H3, followed by detailed work on the mosaic colour palette, materials and final layout. The design was then mapped and divided into manageable sections, allowing our team to assemble the mosaic accurately while maintaining continuity across the larger composition.

Each section was checked, labelled and prepared for transportation before making its way to the project site, where the pieces could be positioned and aligned to recreate the complete artwork.

“It was more than a touch-up; it became a comprehensive rebuild adding and removing tonnes & tonnes of steel.” – YachtBuyer

── TECHNICAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

The Execution
Process

Six technical milestones that define how MEC Artworks translated an award-winning concept into a bespoke, hand-crafted glass mosaic artwork for a luxury superyacht pool deck.

Site & Sightline Analysis

Analyzing deck perspectives and underwater lighting angles from architectural blueprints to ensure the mosaic’s focal point aligns perfectly with the superyacht’s main lounge areas.

Continuous Surface Flow

Adapting and reshaping the radiant starburst lines of our signature "Kosmik" artwork to flow seamlessly across the superyacht pool's unique rectangular dimensions.

Aesthetic & Color Transitions

Artfully blending vibrant emerald greens into rich aquamarines and deep navy glass tiles to create dynamic depth under shifting sunlight and water movement.

2D & 3D Previews

Developing precise digital layouts alongside the UK-based yacht design firm to visualize scale, reflection, and sightlines from the main deck before assembly.

Hand-Cut Fabrication

Hand-crafting each glass mosaic section in our MEC Artworks studio, while honoring the bespoke preferences of the client.

Worldwide Dispatch & Logistics

Carefully packaging and shipping the completed artwork directly to the shipyard, enabling foreign setting teams to execute a flawless installation.

Transform Your Pool Into a Work of Art

For us, H3 was more than a new application for Kosmik. It was an opportunity to see how mosaic could respond to a completely different kind of architecture and to take our work into the superyacht world. Seeing an existing MEC design adapted for such a considered setting was incredibly rewarding, and the project has opened up exciting possibilities for where mosaic can go next.

We’re always interested in seeing where a new idea can take us, so if you have an unusual application or a design you’d like to explore in mosaic, we’d love to hear from you.
