Custom Marble Mosaics: A New Jersey Home's Tile Art Revamp

Project Challenge

A New Jersey residence required a series of custom marble mosaics for the kitchen, butler’s pantry, bathrooms, floors, and architectural features. The challenge was to give each area its own visual identity while creating a consistent design language throughout the home. Each mosaic also needed to respond to the dimensions, materials, and character of its specific space.

Design & Material Selection Process

It was a highly collaborative process that drew inspiration from textiles, dinnerware, drawings, color schemes, and the client’s style.

For instance, the butler’s pantry was created from a soft green vine scheme to a floral palette influenced by the client’s dinnerware.

Natural marble was utilized in creating a connection between the spaces and ensuring that each space had its own unique design. In the kitchen, golden yellow and lapis lazuli were incorporated with a background of Crema Marfil to create an exotic backsplash behind the stovetop.

Fabrication Strategy

Each mosaic was handcrafted according to its design and architectural application. The project combined detailed marble artwork, borders, medallions, field tiles, and waterjet-cut elements, allowing the fabrication approach to change depending on the level of detail required.

Design revisions were also incorporated before and during production. For the cabana turret mosaic, for example, the color balance and pattern dimensions were adjusted based on client feedback before the final piece was completed.

Installation Coordination

With mosaics appearing across several areas of the residence, organization was important during installation. Sections were prepared with assembly markers to help guide placement, while dimensions and design details were reviewed during development to ensure each mosaic worked within its intended location.

This approach helped complex elements such as borders, floor compositions, shower accents, and larger medallions come together accurately while maintaining the intended design.

Project Outcome

The completed residence uses mosaic as a recurring design element without repeating the same artwork from room to room. A classical kitchen backsplash, floral pantry details, shower accents, custom flooring, and architectural medallions each bring a different character to the home.

The Agalia marble mosaic also appears across multiple bathroom surfaces, helping connect the shower wall and floor areas while adapting to each application.
