Museum & Gallery Curators: Commissioning Art-Grade Custom Mosaics
Why Museums & Galleries Commission Custom Mosaic Art
Museums and galleries are entrusted with the preservation of history, art, and cultural heritage. Everything displayed from each exhibit to every gallery space influences the perception of this story in visitors’ minds. A custom handcrafted mosaic designed for a certain exhibition requires not only visual excellence, but the accurate depiction of the original work of art, complementing the exhibit and being suitable for long-term public presentation.
Every museum mosaic project that comes to us at MEC Artworks starts with the understanding of the purpose of a certain institution. We collaborate with curators, conservators, artists, architects, and design specialists to produce mosaics that help present the exhibits, while maintaining artistic integrity and taking care of conservation issues.
Core Elements of an Art Grade Mosaic Commission
To create a custom art-grade mosaic, you need much more than just choosing beautiful materials. Each commission needs research, material selection, and high-quality craftwork.
We choose the highest quality marble, natural stone & marble, smalti, and architectural glass depending on the artwork, the location, and the conservatory’s needs for making mosaics that will last for many years.
- Archival-quality materials for long-term preservation.
- Material palettes matched to the original artwork.
Each project starts with the research of the artwork in order to keep the composition and artistic style in the new medium.
- Accurate reproduction of historic mosaic artworks.
- Careful interpretation of original artistic compositions.
- Preservation of important visual details and proportions.
We skillfully mix the marble and glass pieces to re-create the nuances, complicated patterns, and fine detailing that are evident from any viewing distance.
- Custom color matching for museum-quality accuracy.
- Fine detail recreated through hand-cut tesserae.
- Smooth tonal transitions and natural visual depth.
We customise each mosaic to fit into the environment where it will be installed, while retaining its original design.
- Custom scaling for galleries and museum interiors.
- Balanced proportions for every installation.
- Seamless integration with architectural surroundings.
Where Art-Grade Mosaics Are Featured in Museums & Galleries
The permanent exhibitions need art pieces that will be able to impress visitors through decades while performing their educational and cultural purpose. Custom-made mosaics become an integral architectural element that complements exhibitions.
Historical mosaics might require restoration or replication to preserve their artistic and cultural value. We recreate original artwork, paying due attention to materials, technique, and historical accuracy.
The entrances and notable architectural points form the first impression for the visitors on the museum. Custom mosaics will turn entrances, rotundas, domes, and feature walls into striking focal points that represent the museum and its collections.

Project Challenge
An excellent chance to show the potential of handmade mosaics in architecture was created by Dubai Index 2024. Instead of showcasing single products, MEC Artworks aimed to develop an exhibition space that would be both representative of the studio’s skills in creating bespoke mosaics and inspirational for architects, interior designers, developers, hospitality industry representatives, and individual customers.
Process of Design and Materials Selection
In order to provide viewers with an insight into the broad possibilities of bespoke mosaic design, the exhibition booth was created as an immersive gallery where various kinds of handmade mosaics would be shown. Contemporary mosaics, decorative panels, botanical compositions, abstract art, luxury pool mosaics, and architectural elements would represent the studio’s mosaic portfolio.
Hand-cut marble, high-quality glass, and natural stone mosaics were chosen for the exhibition as they represented various combinations of texture, palette, and artistic techniques. From botanical mosaics, geometric designs, and floral compositions to contemporary abstract designs, each piece of artwork emphasized unique qualities of the bespoke mosaics.
Mosaic Fabrication Method
Each piece of mosaic art showcased in Dubai Index was uniquely handmade by experts with great care to use appropriate materials and fabrication methods. Each of the pieces of art was designed digitally in advance to ensure perfect proportioning, flow, and uniformity in patterns.
Great care was taken in regard to the colors, materials, and tesserae placements to show the amount of craftsmanship used in the residential, hospitality, commercial, and cultural projects. The exhibit demonstrated how the traditional hand-cutting methods of mosaics could be applied in modern and classic architecture.
Exhibition Coordination
The layout of the exhibition booth was well thought out so that visitors could move from one mosaic application to another and at the same time enjoy the piece of art individually. Feature walls, display panels, sample displays, and architecture displays were arranged in such a way that visitors would move smoothly through the exhibition while discussing the possibility of custom designs.
In the course of the exhibition, the MEC Artworks team discussed bespoke projects, materials, processes, and installation around the world with architects, designers, developers, the hospitality industry, and homeowners.
Project Result
The Dubai Index 2024 was an excellent way to demonstrate the capabilities of MEC Artworks in making unique ideas into handmade architectural mosaic designs. Guests had the opportunity to see various bespoke installations, including luxury residential, hospitality, corporate branding, as well as museum-quality art pieces created by the studio.
Apart from showcasing their product, the exhibition also gave the viewers a glimpse of the design philosophy followed by MEC Artworks in each project. This event helped MEC Artworks establish itself as a studio that creates bespoke mosaics with artistic and architectural value as well as timeless craftsmanship.
From Curatorial Brief to Finished Mosaic Installation
Each commission from a museum starts with the knowledge of the artwork, project objectives, and the conditions of installation. It is in close collaboration with the curators and design teams that we create a mosaic that will retain its artistic integrity while fitting perfectly into the desired environment.
- Curatorial Consultation and Planning: We analyze the artwork, size, and project needs before creating the mosaic design.
- Design & Materials: Renders, color palette, and material samples are created before starting the production process.
- Handmade Production: Our artists manually cut and place each tessera during the production process.
- Installation & Delivery: Our completed mosaic is ready to be installed in any museum or gallery worldwide.
How We Protect Artistic & Historical Integrity in Every Commission
Each museum commission is treated with great care and attention to detail to preserve the integrity of the original piece of art.
- Historical Research & Documentation: Before we create the design, we research reference materials, the artwork, and historical facts associated with it.
- Selection of Authentic Materials: High-quality marble, stone, and glass mosaic tiles are selected to match the original piece of art.
- Collaborative Design and Material Review: The curators and architects review the design and material options before fabrication.
- Precision: Each piece of the tessera is handmade and installed to preserve the composition, colors, and details of the artwork.
