A Custom Floor Mosaic in California: Chad's Golden Spiral
“The challenge wasn’t just recreating the fractal spiral; it was making it belong in that specific room. Once we rotated the wave to embrace that inside corner, the entire composition finally clicked into place.”
-MEC, Design Team
A striking, custom-handmade glass and marble mosaic showcasing the delicate movement of nautilus shell. This bold statement floor was crafted with intense gold, warm bronze, and deep charcoal tones. It was custom-made to effortlessly fit into a special layout of a California bathroom.
Client Brief
Creating a premium mosaic design requires matching a meaningful idea with the actual space it will occupy. The initial look that Chad from California had in mind was so lavish, rich, and bold. When he contacted MEC Artworks, he was thinking about two different bathroom visions: the first was a huge 120 square foot area referred to as Big Sur.
The second one was a smaller, 40 square foot space called Cambria. MEC began to work on the Cambria floor first. The aim was to get proper digital blueprints and then translate them into a striking handcrafted tile floor.
The Inspiration
We really liked the initial pictures that Chad shared with us. It was a repeating swirling design within an intricate seashell. The large, golden spiral pattern resembled a wave; it had tiny, delicate curls with lacy details.
What made the pattern so interesting was that it had a mysterious feel to it. This was due to the bold and dark tones perhaps. The artwork carried a 3D effect; it had so many layers. The immersive touch that it brough about was so pleasing to see. It felt like you could just walk inside it.
Design Development
The Challenge of the Floor Plan
Drawing a wave pattern on a blank canvas is easy, but fitting a spiral pattern into an actual bathroom is a completely different challenge. The team at MEC essentially took the best sections of the picture first.
After that, the big spiral and the bold shades, were assembled perfectly to fit into the exact dimensions of the space. The exact drawings of the Cambria room were shared by Chad. The bathroom had an inward corner, which meant that the golden wave had to be installed in a very natural manner.
The biggest design choice that we had to make during the project was deciding where to exactly place the main spiral pattern.
Design Refinement & Collaboration
To get all the details right, we worked very closely with our client, Chad. To remove any guesswork involved in working on our own, we built this mosaic artwork together with Chad.
To make sure that the spiral pattern would blend in the bathroom perfectly, Chad suggested moving the center piece slightly towards the left. This alteration gave more visibility to the thinnest part of the swirl in the corner, making it look great.
Moving forward, Chad spoke to our creative director Hamza over the phone. That call enabled us to work on some final details. The design was tweaked one more time by moving the spiral slightly away from the wall. This made the mosaic artwork look so well balanced.
Color Palette & Materials
When it came to incorporating the 3D feel of the original vision, our team finalized such a lovely mix of materials. The final design was fully handcrafted using custom glass tiles, followed by these delicate touches:
- Ice jade glass: To add a glow to the smaller, intricate details.
- Iridescent glass: To get a shimmery effect when the glass interacts with natural light.
- Metallic foil tiles: To make the golden spiral look like it is shining from inside out.
- Marble accents: Natural stone texture was much needed for the floor.
- Dark contrast tiles: The lines of the swirl would clearly stand out against this background.
The Final Artwork and Delivery
Working with the ice jade and metallic foil meant we were essentially painting with light. You simply cannot get that kind of shifting, luminous depth from a standard, flat tile.”
— MEC Artworks Design Team
The final Cambria floor was a highly captivating, vibrant mosaic floor. The artwork had movement in it; the shifting shades of bronze and champagne along with the tiny shell patterns breathed life into it. As every piece was manually crafted, the custom mosaic floor had a very real and textured feel to it. A flat picture or regular tile could never compete with this.
We used to send frequent picture updates to Chad, once the design was approved. To make sure that we followed his schedule, quickly proceeded with the shipping, placing the final floor mosaic on a flexible mesh backing. MEC’s team discussed some installation tips like ensuring that the ground was dry, flat, and smooth along with using clear grout to make the glass look deep.
Final Installed Photos
“I knew the original digital concept was highly complex, but seeing it actually translated into physical glass and gold is something else entirely. It feels like the floor is alive and moving.”
— Chad, Homeowner
The Cambria bathroom was all set now, opening the door possibility for the potential Big Sur project next.
FAQs
What were the materials used to create the golden spiral mosaic artwork?
This mosaic design was totally handmade, using custom glass mosaic tiles, shiny ice jade glass, natural stone for texture, and metallic foil tiles. These layers gave it a 3D touch. The combination of such beautiful materials made it stand out.
How was the fractal shell pattern customised for this particular bathroom?
We had to be very careful with the placement. As the bathroom layout had an inside corner, we got into a deep collaboration with Chad to rotate the artwork in order to fit it in a very natural way. Upon turning it clockwise, the narrowest part of the spiral got included in the corner, making the layout look so intentional and balanced.
How is a custom glass mosaic floor shipped and installed?
MEC carefully divided the final handcrafted artwork into flexible mesh-mounted sheets and promptly shipped it to California for a smooth installation. We also gave proper tips to the installer and suggested a dry and flat floor followed by a translucent epoxy grout to help maintain the visual depth of the glass.
Was this the only custom floor created for the client's home?
This 40-square-foot Cambria bath floor was the first phase of a two-part inquiry. The client also has a larger, 120-square-foot area planned, known as the Big Sur project, which remains a beautiful possibility for the future.

I started the ordering process with MEC a couple months ago and the whole process was amazing. I worked with Nada and she was so helpful. I went through so many design revisions and the whole team was responsive and patient. It started with me sending in my concepts ideas, going through their site and looking at designs that matched my vision. From their they sent me some images that were in line with my vision and we narrowed it down. They then created a few concept images. I selected my favorite and we then spent a few weeks tweaking the design until it was absolutely perfect. They sent over renderings of what it would look like in my kitchen. They matched the dimensions of my shelves, rangehood, and drew up it up to the exact look of my kitchen. Once we got the design down, they created the mosaic. The mosaic looks way more stunning than the concept. I am still waiting on the product and will update with images once it is received.Posted on Google Katie UhlenbrockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a VERY specific vision to see a painting by one of our favorite artists translated into a tile mosaic as a whimsical wow factor for our kitchen renovation. I searched Pinterest for mosaic styles similar to what I was envisioning, and realized that every mosaic I was saving had been produced by MEC Artworks. I promptly reached out with our vision to the MEC team and received a response back right away. Nada and the design team invested a great deal of time and personal care communicating and working with us to get the mosaic design exactly how we wanted it. While constructing the mosaic, Nada and the MEC team worked tirelessly to ensure that every detail was as true to the original artwork and our vision as possible. One aspect of the process I really appreciated was MEC providing us regular photo updates of the construction progress, allowing us to see in real time the mosaic coming together, and give feedback if we saw something we wanted adjusted. We are BEYOND THRILLED with the finished product! Nada and the team at MEC are true artisans. Professional, inspired, and deeply caring for their customers and every piece they create.
