Materials Hand-cut glass

A hand-cut glass mosaic commissioned by a client in Dubai for their luxury villa. Crafted in shades of blue, including Light Cerulean, Cobalt, Azure, Midnight Blue, and Navy Blue, which form the backdrop of the artwork. Contrasting shades like Blue-Grey and Creamy Whites were used in the crane itself.

Touches of Gold were used to craft the bird’s beak and added to the backdrop pattern to enhance the look of this nature-inspired mosaic. The Gold gave the entire confection a regal look.

Client Brief for the Bird Mosaic

A Dubai-based client reached out for a bespoke custom mosaic for a feature wall in their foyer area.

They wanted something warm and welcoming. Something connected to nature. They had viewed the website, and they really admired the bird mosaics.

This is how the idea of a bird came into being. The crane was then selected by our client for its striking features and air of royalty.

Shades of Gold were added to it to make it a really beautiful piece of wall art. A mosaic which would set the tone for the rest of the house.

The mosaic was to be installed on the wall which faced the front door. MEC Artworks was being given the responsibility of giving an introduction to the look of the whole space.

We are very proud to say that our client was very happy with the completed artwork, which they termed ‘simply amazing’.

Inspiration Mood Board for the Bird Mosaic

Cranes are glorious creatures and powerful fliers. Their wingspan is quite large, and they move with a grace that is wonderful to behold.

Our design team decided to craft the crane in a flying posture so that its mighty wings may be fully visible.

A backdrop of different shades of blue was to give the illusion of the crane soaring in the skies.

Shades of blue that were incorporated in the artwork, include Light Cerulean, Cobalt, Azure, Midnight Blue, and Navy Blue.

The tiles in the background were arranged in seamless flowing patterns, giving the idea of a crane taking flight through the winds.

Each detail of the crane was meticulously crafted. Each tesserae was hand-cut into a distinctive shape to come together and create the bird’s features.

From its golden beak to its Grey-Blue and Creamy White neck and body, the complete creature looked perfect.

Design Development

The glass crane mosaic

Initial Idea

As our client was in favour of a nature-inspired mosaic, we deliberated on different options like plants, birds and land animals. They fell in love with our bird mosaic collection and finally decided upon a bird.

The crane in the sky

Layout of the Bird Mosaic

The crane was depicted in flight. The blues around suggest a sky background with ripples of wind in different shades of blue. A delicate Gold outlining has been given to the whole bird, accentuating each of its features. The Gold also creates a more dramatic contrast with the background.

Range of Colour Palettes

The crane was done in shades of Grey-Blue and Creamy White with a Gold outline. The background sported an exotic mix of blues, including Light Cerulean, Cobalt, Azure, Midnight Blue, and Navy Blue. The bird’s bill, feet and legs were designed in Gold with a layer of Gold feathers. A startling Ruby-Red ‘crown’ at the top part of its head was the finishing touch to this magnificent creature.

The Crane in Flight

A few glimpses of the magnificent mosaic artistry

Rounded tesserae were used to make cloud-like depictions, giving the idea of the crane soaring through the clouds. Traces of gold were also added to these magical ‘clouds’”.

— Craftsmen Team, MEC Artworks.

This bespoke custom bird mosaic was crafted to show the crane take flight. Each part of the creature in the artwork spells poise and grace.

The slender legs swinging through the air, the mighty wings working with the wind and the golden bill set as if with a purpose.

A side view of the crane was depicted in this picture. The one visible eye also seemed to be scanning the skies with an aim in mind.

Cranes have a grey, black, red or white crown. Our design team decided to go with a red coloured crown.

The tile colour finalised for the crown was Ruby-Red. The crown really became the crowning feature of this mosaic artwork.

The completed artwork showed a kingly creature in royal shades of Gold, Ruby-Red and Blue-Grey. Perfect from the tip of its bill down to its feet.

The backdrop of this mosaic was like a sky out of a fairytale. The shades used to design it gave it that unreal feel.

FAQs

Certainly! A bespoke glass crane mosaic can be designed around your preferred dimensions, colour shades, pose, and artistic style. The crane can be made realistic, abstract, or caricature-style to enhance the surrounding interior.

Glass mosaics are easier to maintain compared to other materials. Routine dusting and cleaning with a mild cleaner will keep the surface looking new and clean. High-end installation and premium grout are also essential for the longevity of the mosaic.

The artwork is crafted using a variety of glass types, colours, textures, shading, and tile-laying styles. Delicate features such as feathers, wings, eyes, and reflections are crafted with smaller tesserae, giving the crane greater visual depth. Larger pieces are used in feathers and the backdrop.

High-quality mosaic glass, such as hand-cut Murano or specially composed art glass, can be selected to create the crane’s feathers, movement, and fine details. Various finishes and textures can also be combined to create depth and subtle reflections.
