This project was exciting as it tested the skill of our design team and artisans alike. We were honoured to be singled out for another collaboration with Lifted Interiors.

As is often the case with international projects, the project was completed in a longer timeframe; however, it was ensured that the client would be completely satisfied with the resulting artwork.

Client Brief for the Custom Mosaic Wall Art

How MEC Artworks designed and built a custom hand-cut Murano glass floral feature wall for a luxury McLean, VA home.

Our first project with Tia, the ‘White Peony’ was a floral mosaic for a luxury bathroom in a private residence in Washington, DC. The completed project was “absolutely beautiful” to quote our client.

Though the second time collab was again a hand-cut Murano glass wall mosaic, it presented many different challenges that required communication and clarity on both sides.

Tia had some very specific ideas in mind regarding the size and overall look of the floral feature wall for her luxury interior.

Nada, our mosaic consultant, actively worked with Lifted Interiors to ensure that the measurements and final look of the floral pattern were as desired.

Inspiration Moodboard for the Floral Mosaic

The project this time was a custom floral luxury mosaic wall art. Tia already had a design pattern in mind, which was a mood board prepared in the previous project association between MEC and Lifted Interiors.

The bespoke mosaic design was basically a peony with big ruffled petals in lighter shades. The background was to be given a contrasting colour so that the posy would stand out prominently in a darker base colour.

The final colours which were decided for the floral mosaic were creamy whites with a touch of beige for the petals. The leaves were done in a deeper shade of bronze with strips of gold in between for the veins and the stalks.

The mood board was an easy part of the design pattern this time round. The real challenge lay in ‘fitting’ the entire mosaic picture in the designated space while keeping it clear and complete.

Design Development of This Custom Mosaic

Initial Mood Board

The moodboard was ready beforehand, as the floral mosaic this time was again the ‘White Peony’, which MEC had previously crafted for Tia.

Recentering Cropping

A specific part of the moodboard was designated as the central element of the mosaic artwork.

The Ad-lib Custom Crop

Tia first requested a ‘shrink-to-fit’ option as a 1-inch trim was required for the artwork to sit well in its designated space. Not wanting to compromise the clarity of the artwork, which would have resulted from this shrinking, MEC came up with a customised on-site cropping solution.

Production & Delivery of The Artwork

The tale of what goes on behind the scenes

‘This project highlighted how MEC and their clients are always on the same page, as per every detail of an ongoing project’

Director, MEC

Once all the design details were in place, our team of artisans set out to craft this masterpiece. As this was a second-time collab, MEC was well aware of the design style and tastes of Lifted Interiors.

Our Mosaic Consultant, Nada, remained in constant contact with Tia to share progress and ensure that the artwork met the approval of the client at every stage.

The Murano glass really proved to be the most suitable material for the artwork as it picked up the colour palettes of the design very well.

The white gave an almost ivory shade on the deep coloured background. The gold accents used added a whole new level of luxury and opulence to the fixture.

The entire creation really seemed to sit well with Murano glass tiles that gave it the sophistication and grace it deserved.

The artwork was mounted on mesh sheets to be numbered and packed carefully for delivery. An installation map was included within the package to make the installation swift and easy.

MEC’s Commitment to Excellence & Customer Satisfaction

A second time, collaboration with MEC was as smooth and satisfying as it was the first time round

— Tia

This project brought along its share of excitement and energy. It was absolutely awesome to be called upon a second time for a custom floral mosaic for the interior designers’ team, Lifted Interiors.

The technical problem that came along with the 1-inch pencil trim of this custom mosaic wall art for a residence in McLean, Virginia, was dealt with professionally.

Our Mosaic Consultant first fully explained how the 1-inch pencil trim from each side would make the mosaic lose its completeness as an image. The next shrink-to-fit option was viable digitally, but not doable on real 15 mm Murano glass tiles.

The constraints were explained one professional to another. The team at MEC did not just explain why those options couldn’t be done.

They came up with a fully customised crop solution for this bespoke floral mosaic design that would render it perfect for its assigned space and also retain the clarity and resolution of this piece of luxury mosaic wall art.
