Kosmik Radiance - A Vortex Pool Mosaic for a Luxury Private Residence

This bespoke pool installation reimagines the boundaries of pool design, transforming a courtyard pool into a breathtaking cosmic centerpiece that radiates from the depths.

“We wanted the water to feel like it was swirling into a deep, celestial void while the sun reflected off the iridescent ‘rays’ of the mosaic.”

This project represents the full spectrum of MEC’s capabilities: from the initial design consultancy where we fine-tuned the optical illusions, to the precision fabrication, global shipping, and final on-site installation.

Client Brief

This signature project was for a client who sought to push the limits of traditional pool aesthetics. By taking the DNA of our previous “Kosmik” design and evolving it for a larger, more complex basin, we delivered a one-of-a-kind aquatic experience.

The client needed it adapted for a specific courtyard environment where the pool is viewed both from the ground level and from the surrounding balconies.

Inspiration Moodboard

The core inspiration was a celestial supernova—a single point of light exploding outward into the dark reaches of space.

The design layers include:

  • a deep, concentrated core of midnight navy tiles,
  • hundreds of individual “rays” of teal and aqua that stretch toward the pool walls
  • and, a transition into shimmering turquoise at the shallow ends and steps, creating a natural gradient that mimics the ocean’s shallows.

The design had to complement the warm, Mediterranean-style stone of the residence, providing a cool, vibrant contrast to the earth-toned courtyard.

Design Development

Initial Sketches

Because this pool features structural steps and varying depths, we couldn’t just “drop” a pattern in. We used mathematical mapping to ensure the radiating lines of the mosaic remained unbroken as they climbed over the steps and turned up the vertical walls.

Creative Exploration

We provided the client with detailed renders showing how the “shimmer” of the iridescent glass would behave under different lighting conditions. This allowed us to decide exactly where to place the “hot spots” of bright aqua to maximize the optical vortex effect.

Color Palette & Materials

We selected a palette of high-gloss glass mosaics. By mixing matte deep blues with iridescent teals, we created a surface that “changes” as the viewer moves around the pool, giving the artwork a living, breathing quality.

Engineering the Surface

Installing a complex geometric pattern in a submerged environment requires extreme technical precision. We worked closely with the site engineers to ensure the pool shell was perfectly cured and waterproofed before the first tile was laid. To keep the “vortex” lines straight across the pool floor, our team used laser-guided layouts during the installation phase.

The floating steps were treated as part of the artwork, with the mosaic pattern wrapping around the edges to maintain the illusion of a continuous, exploding star.

We also recently translated this design for a superyacht, in collaboration with Seable&Co. and Reymond Langton Design.

““It was fascinating to see the same Kosmik mosaic come to life in two completely different settings at the same time — one grounded within a residence, the other moving through open water on a superyacht.”

— MEC Design Team

Once the design was finalized in our studio, the mosaic was hand-assembled in our workshop into easy-to-install sheets. Each section was numbered and mapped, then securely crated for shipping.

We used high-performance epoxy grout, specifically chosen for its resistance to pool chemicals and its ability to blend into the dark navy core of the design, ensuring the focus remained entirely on the artwork.

Final Installed Photos

“Seeing the mosaic installed was amazing — even more beautiful than I imagined.”

— Client

The client was thrilled with the result, noting that the pool had transformed from a simple amenity into the centerpiece of the home’s architecture.

FAQs

We certainly do. From our studio, we’ve successfully crated and shipped custom masterpieces to private residences in Beverly Hills, boutique hotels in Santorini, and luxury villas in the Maldives. We provide a “mosaic map” and numbered sheets, making the installation process smooth for your local contractors—or we can send our own specialist team to oversee it.

A luxury pool is a 24-hour feature. While the design looks stunning under the midday sun in Dubai, it truly comes alive at night with the right lighting. We recommend LED spotlights positioned at the “epicenter” of designs like the Kosmik. Because we use iridescent and metallic-flecked glass, the light bounces off the facets of each hand-cut tile, creating a shimmering, holographic effect that makes the water look like liquid jewels.

Absolutely. We primarily use high-quality glass tesserae because they are non-porous and frost-proof. Unlike standard pool tiles that might crack during a freeze-thaw cycle in the Swiss Alps or fade under the intense UV rays of the Australian Outback, our glass mosaics maintain their structural integrity and vibrant color for decades. We also specify the exact epoxy grouts needed for your specific climate.

Most companies give you a catalog; we give you dedicated custom design consultancy. We work with your architects from day one to ensure the plumbing, lighting, and “art” all exist in perfect harmony.
