Classical Canal Scene Mosaic for a Private Al Khawaneej Villa, Dubai

Set within the serene, upscale enclave of Al Khawaneej, this bespoke mosaic feature wall transforms a private villa into an immersive architectural landscape.

“We really wanted this to feel like a real scene, not just a flat wall—especially with the water running over it. Getting that depth right while making sure it holds up outdoors was the fun challenge.”

We recently had the opportunity to collaborate with our Dubai-based client, Mona, on a custom outdoor mosaic installation—an ambitious project that blended architectural illusion and water integration.

Mona is a returning client, and this marks our second project together, with more already in the pipeline.

This project reflects the core of what we do at MEC: transforming inspiration into immersive, site-specific mosaic experiences through our design consultancy.

Client Brief

This project followed an earlier floral-themed installation we completed for her, marking the beginning of an ongoing creative relationship built on trust and design collaboration.

The design inspirations were sourced from multiple catalogs, AI imagery, and hand-drawn sketches. We explored one theme after the other before finalizing a serene landscape, reminiscent of Eden’s garden.

We engineered this mosaic to wrap perfectly around the waterfall’s hardware. Whether it is a pool, a kitchen backsplash, or a bathroom, we design specifically for your fixtures and plumbing from day one. This careful planning ensures that every nozzle and outlet fits into the artwork with total precision.

Inspiration Moodboard

The final design, approved by Mona, takes inspiration from classic European buildings, with tall grand columns, carved statues, and a straight water path that pulls your eyes deep into the scene.

Everything unfolds like a story in layers:

  • A quiet canal in the front with a single gondola gently moving through it
  • Neatly arranged gardens and statues that bring balance and rhythm
  • Huge, majestic architecture standing like a centerpiece
  • And far away, mountains and sky that add a strong sense of depth

In total, over 80% of the explored designs were developed by MEC’s in-house team, reinforcing our role as design consultants—not just fabricators.

Design Development

Initial Sketches

We began by translating the idea of “depth” into visual structure. This meant working with perspective lines, vanishing points, and layered architectural elements to create a believable sense of distance.

2D & 3D Visualizations

Both MEC and the client developed renders to test how the mosaic would interact with its environment—particularly the waterfall feature and pool below.

Color Palette & Materials

Given the outdoor setting, color selection had to balance beauty with longevity. Earth tones and stone hues were used for architectural elements. Muted greens added natural softness. Controlled blues defined the water and sky.

Engineering the Surface

Creating depth in design is one challenge—executing it physically is another.

To preserve the integrity of the perspective:

  • The wall was carefully leveled to eliminate any surface inconsistencies
  • A full preparation process was carried out, including: cement-sand plastering, waterproofing using cementitious materials, scaffolding setup for precision installation. You can look up the grout suggestions guide to get a better idea of this process.

Because the mosaic was positioned directly above a pool, we also applied protective measures to safeguard the pool surface during installation.

“The canal, gardens, architecture, and mountains now flow together just the way we hoped, and the water element really helps tie everything into the actual site.”

— Design Team

Once finalized, the design moved into production—where craftsmanship took over. The canal’s reflective quality was achieved through careful placement and material contrast

Installation was carried out entirely by our team in the UAE, ensuring that every detail—from alignment to finishing—met our standards.

To protect the artwork long-term, we applied a cementitious epoxy coating, creating a durable barrier against moisture, chemicals, and environmental wear.

Fabrication & installation

“I’m really happy with how it turned out—it looks very nice.”

— Mona, Dubai

Mona described the project as a success and expressed interest in future collaborations—something we value deeply as a reflection of both design satisfaction and execution quality.

For us, this project stands as an example of how design consultancy, technical precision, and craftsmanship come together to create something truly lasting.

FAQs

Yes. Projects like Mona’s bespoke poolside mosaic wall are a direct example of how we approach water-integrated mosaic installations. Through our design consultancy, we plan tesserae orientation, water flow interaction, and long-term exposure from the very beginning. We incorporate waterproof substrates, use high-performance mosaic adhesives and grout systems, and apply protective layers such as cementitious epoxy coatings to ensure durability without compromising the artistic depth of the mosaic design.

For colder climates, we adapt both material selection and mosaic installation techniques. This includes flexible bonding systems, frost-resistant natural stone and vitreous glass tesserae, and proper expansion detailing. Our mosaics are engineered to maintain structural integrity and color stability, ensuring that intricate mosaic artwork performs reliably even in harsh weather conditions.

In poolside and wet-area mosaic applications, we take a layered protection approach. During installation, surrounding surfaces like pools are carefully protected. Post-installation, we use cementitious waterproofing systems, specialized mosaic grout, and protective coatings—such as the cementitious epoxy layer used in this project—to prevent water damage, staining, and color erosion in high-moisture environments. Here’s a beginner’s guide to grouting in mosaic installations.

Absolutely. Our process is deeply rooted in bespoke mosaic design development. We create multiple design iterations, detailed mosaic layouts, and realistic renders tailored to your space. Alongside this, we produce and ship physical mosaic samples—allowing you to assess stone, glass, textures, and color palettes to ensure the final handcrafted mosaic aligns perfectly with your vision.
