When New York homeowner Jessie Davis approached MEC Artworks, she envisioned a mosaic that brought her love for floral arrangements to life; something more than just flowers, something that evoked emotion and movement. The result is a stunning bathroom backsplash mural: a serene display of floating water lilies, rendered in a delicate balance of cerulean blues, midnight water tones, and resting blossoms in white, red, and soft pinks.

Inspired by Nature - Crafted with Purpose

This piece turns an everyday shower wall into a contemplative work of art. Jessie’s original inspiration was simple yet poetic: flowers on water. She had collected various reference images of blossoming florals, water garden scenes, and even impressionist art pieces that hinted at reflections, ripples, and bloom. She wanted a mosaic that didn’t just “show” flowers, but one that captured the essence of them floating on still water.

After reviewing multiple renderings from MEC, Jessie gravitated toward a concept based on water lilies—an arrangement that symbolized peace, resilience, and beauty in motion. She was particularly drawn to the way light dances on water and how petals appear to rest effortlessly atop it. This nuance became the heart of the project.

Our Design: From Palette to Pattern

To translate Jessie’s vision into a tactile masterpiece, we began with a palette that evoked both the depth and serenity of water, as well as the delicate vibrance of the lilies.

Cerulean Blue and Midnight Water Effects: These tiles form the base of the mural, designed to mimic the reflective, flowing nature of water. A mix of high-gloss and matte finishes helped create depth and illusionary movement.
Resting Lilies in White, Red, and Subtle Pink: These blooms were brought to life using soft-toned mosaic pieces, carefully arranged to give the impression of natural layering and weightlessness on water.
Custom Tile Selection and Shaping: Petals, leaves, and ripples were all crafted using custom-cut tiles, allowing us to achieve organic curves and edges that mirrored the irregularities of nature—beautiful, imperfect, and real. This palette gave us the ability to create harmony and contrast between fluid water patterns and static florals, a key aspect Jessie was passionate about.

Further Design Alterations

As with all MEC bespoke projects, client feedback plays a central role in shaping the final design. Jessie worked closely with our design team, reviewing multiple drafts and test patterns. She specifically requested stronger contrast between the water surface and the floral elements, to ensure the lilies appeared as though they were floating – not blending. Based on her feedback, we refined the ripple patterns, adjusted tile brightness in key areas, and modified flower positions to better reflect her vision of layered depth and clarity. Production and Design Feedbacks

Once the final render was approved, the mural moved into production – a phase where MEC’s commitment to precision truly shines. Our artisans meticulously arranged thousands of tiles, translating the digital vision into a tangible, breathtaking mosaic. Special attention was given to water gradients, where tile finish and placement created the illusion of movement. The floral elements were layered and detailed, requiring hand-cut precision to capture the softness of petals and the unique curvature of lily pads. Even in a space as intimate as a shower wall, the artwork delivers depth, scale, and sophistication.

Now installed in her New York bathroom, this mosaic backsplash turns an ordinary shower into a serene oasis. The water lilies float effortlessly, resting across a shifting blue surface that mimics light, depth, and movement. The balance between cool tones and blooming colors creates a calming and immersive environment. The space feels larger, more open, and infinitely more artistic, all within the dimensions of a standard shower wall.
