Custom Marble Mosaics: A New Jersey Home's Tile Art Revamp
In a New Jersey home filled with character, custom marble mosaics reflect the homeowner’s artistic vision. See how Daniele collaborated with MEC to turn everyday spaces into captivating visual stories.
Ever wondered what goes into creating a custom mosaic? When MEC says “custom,” we mean a one-of-a-kind piece made just for you. From the colors and tile materials down to the inspiration behind the design, our projects are a true collaboration, driven by our clients’ vision. Recently, we had the privilege of working with a wonderful client, Daniele Comolli,* to bring a series of mosaic pieces to life in her family’s New Jersey home. Here’s an inside look at how we created beautiful custom mosaics for Daniele’s home, one room at a time.

What Can I Get Customized?
When we say custom we mean custom-made, we mean it! Here at MEC, we have a team of incredibly talented designers and design consultants that work one-on-one with the customer to help them with their dream mosaic. Clients come to us with a variety of inspirations and themes in mind. It could be anything from a photograph they took on a holiday, to a mood board they made on Pinterest, a pattern or tile design they saw somewhere and just could not get out of their head.
It can also be a portrait (of a beloved family member or a pet), their favorite TV show, or video game. A handmade sketch or even a flower. Similarly, the inspiration for the color palette can hit at any time and place. Read on to find out how this client, Daniele, matched their butler’s pantry mosaic border with her dinner set!
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Custom Mosaic Process
Want a sneak peek into our collaborative customization process? Here are some excerpts and images from the correspondence between Daniele and MEC. This gives you a fascinating insight into the level of customization we offer. Please keep in mind that every project is unique. Our clients approach us in the way they feel most comfortable, and we adapt accordingly—whether through emails, phone calls, video conferences, or virtual collaborative whiteboards. In Daniele’s case, our correspondence mainly consisted of emails.
The First Steps: Inspiration & Design Concepts
Daniele came to us during the construction of her new home, with plans to add custom mosaic designs in several key areas: the kitchen, pantry, bathrooms, and exterior. She had a clear vision and an eye for detail, eager to incorporate elements that would complement her home’s design and reflect her personal style.
When Inspiration Strikes Twice – Butler’s Pantry Mosaic Design Evolution
Inspiration for custom mosaics can come from anywhere, and the scope often evolves as we work together. For Daniele, her initial idea for the butler’s pantry backsplash drew from the soft greens and whites of her curtain fabric, aiming for a delicate vine design. Our team suggested designs along these lines, but as we moved forward, her vision grew.
A cherished dinnerware set with more vibrant floral tones inspired a shift to a richer palette. We were excited to pivot with her, making adjustments so each detail would truly reflect her style.
Our goal is always to create mosaics that our clients will love for years to come. If a design direction changes along the way, we’re here for it. Each project is personal, and seeing our customers delighted with the final piece is what drives us.
Exciting progress in the butler’s pantry! The rich, natural marble colors create a vibrant backdrop, even with a bit of work still ahead. The stickers on the tiles are just markers for assembly, allowing for an easy installation process as we get closer to completion!
The Cabana Turret
The project didn’t stop at the butler’s pantry. The homeowner also engaged us for several other mosaic piece – the stunning 13′ diameter cabana turret mosaic being the first on the list.
After reviewing initial renderings, the client requested adjustments: “I think the cabana turret mosaic looks pretty good, but I would like to add some more Rosa Alicante.” Our design team carefully incorporated their feedback, stating, “We have added the extra Alicante you had asked for.”
Their proactive communication was key to achieving the desired outcome. “I think it will be fine to make the pattern 3’7.15″ instead of 2’6″. Regarding the shading and additional Rosa Alicante, please see the attached photo for our comments,” they noted, guiding us through the final touches.
The magic happened in our workshop, where the mosaic came to life through careful fabrication, matching the client’s vision perfectly.
Entrance Turret Marble Medallion
The entrance turret floor medallion rug tells the story of how a hand-drawn sketch filled with different marble colors evolved into a striking design. Each detail sparked conversations about color choices and how they would work together. This collage highlights the progression from initial idea to the final production.
Kitchen Mosaic Backsplash ft. Lapis Lazuli
This stunning European-inspired marble mosaic above the stovetop combines golden yellow with rich lapis lazuli, drawing the eye and adding a splash of color. The smooth Crema Marfil background pairs perfectly with the warm simple grid mosaic field tiles around it.
Matching “Agalia” Marble Mosaic Wall & Floor Designs
Each mosaic in Daniele’s home has its own personality, but one design brings a common thread through different spaces—the Agalia Marble Mosaic. This design was chosen for three key areas: the shower wall, a floor area framed by a border, and the master bath floor where it stretches wall-to-wall without any border.
In each spot, Agalia’s look ties these spaces together, creating a lovely flow through the home. It’s a design choice that feels both connected and unique in every room, making each area feel part of the whole yet special on its own.
Handcrafted Marble Mosaic Flooring Around the House
In this residence, we created a series of custom marble mosaics tailored to enhance each floor area. The handcrafted tiles add character, while simple grid field tiles seamlessly work with the existing porcelain to highlight a soothing green color. Each design is thoughtfully crafted: one area features a waterjet cut tile design, while another is adorned with a stylish border of plain mosaic tiles that frame the space beautifully. Additionally, a small rug-shaped mosaic adds a cozy focal point, enhancing the overall charm of the home. These varied mosaics not only provide functional flooring but also elevate the aesthetic of each room, making every step a delight.
Shower Area Wall Mosaic Tile Accents
Each shower area features beautiful thin strips of marble mosaic art. The floral design brings a sense of calm, the French motif adds chic elegance, and the Greco-Roman style offers a touch of grandeur. Together, these mosaics highlight the individuality of each bathroom, celebrating a variety of styles.
