Client Brief for a Custom Butterfly Mosaic Wall Art

Butterflies are perhaps among the most fragile yet beautiful creations of nature. A creature that almost everyone likes.

It makes sense to want them to be a part of your custom mosaic nature art. Our client, Jake, wanted something lively and uplifting to brighten up the walls of their sitting area.

As they wanted a piece of nature-inspired wall art, MEC suggested ‘butterflies’, and they were more than willing to proceed with the idea.

The Monarch butterfly was chosen specifically because it represents a striking range of contrasting shades: Orange, Black and White.

The suggestion for custom glass mosaic butterfly wall art in our client’s lounge went famously with the rest of their decor. The colour palettes chosen also helped to uplift the surrounding light-shaded upholstery in the space.

A space was designated for this custom glass mosaic butterfly with specially installed LED lighting for the fixture.

Inspiration Moodboard for the Custom Glass Mosaic Butterfly

With all these details in place, the inspiration mood board for this custom mosaic nature art was quite simple to put together.

The material Jake chose was hand-cut glass. The basic colours were Orange, Black and White. Our design team played with a few shades of orange in the making of the glass mosaic wing design.

The hues that were finalised were Coral, Pumpkin Orange and Rust. Touches of Sky Blue and Ocean Blue were also added to the wing colours to increase the diversity of shades.

Black and White were interspersed in the design, and the whole confection was given a Creamy White background.

Initial Moodboard

The Monarch butterfly was the inspiration for this mosaic. Thus, the colours and design pattern of it were the outline for the initial mood board. Several different glass mosaic wing designs were experimented with.

Design Pattern Layout

The design pattern was like that of the Monarch butterfly, a common species found in San Jose and its surroundings. Mesh sheets in the exact design of the butterfly were prepared. They were then filled in with the colourful tesserae hand-cut for this artwork.

Lines and Curves

This butterfly mosaic posed an artistic challenge to our expert team of craftsmen as there were many small nooks and crannies to be filled up. Each tesserae had to be cut in a very specific way to fill up the butterfly-patterned mesh sheet. Our team really outdid themselves with the crafting of this handcrafted glass mosaic butterfly with detailed wing patterns.

The Production of This Custom Glass Mosaic Butterfly

The magic taking place behind the scenes

‘Mosaic butterflies that looked and felt just like the real deal’

— Jake

The next step was the actual crafting of this custom mosaic nature artwork. At MEC, we follow proper protocols for making your custom artwork. The process may be modified in accordance with the requirements of the particular artwork.

Mesh sheets were first prepared, consisting of fine wires designed to match the exact shape of the handmade glass mosaic butterfly sculpture.

Tesserae were then designed in the exact shape required for each space in the wire mesh butterfly.

The top wings were designed with mostly black and white coloured tesserae with a fine line of Pumpkin orange and coral coloured tiles for a more dramatic effect.

The lowner wings were designed with the same hues, with the addition of Rust coloured tesserae in the mix.

A few of the butterflies crafted were also given shades of Sky blue and Ocean blue in their wings to increase the variety of colour used in this custom mosaic nature art for interior walls.

The antennae and legs of the butterflies were done in black tesserae. The hand-cut glass provided such an iridescence that the butterflies had the same gleaming effect which is observed in the real creature.

FAQs

Of course! A custom butterfly mosaic can be designed with preferred colours, butterfly species, patterns, shape, size, number and style. The design can be tailored to complement your walls, furniture, flooring, and existing décor. Additions of other creatures like birds and other insects may also be done if required.

Custom mosaics can be installed on properly prepared walls of any material, including plaster, concrete, cement, stone, and other stable wall surfaces. The wall should be built well, clean, level, and suitable for the chosen installation system. An installation team will generally first inspect and prepare walls before installing your wall mosaic art.

Though butterfly mosaics are mostly installed in living rooms, they may be crafted in entrance halls, dining areas, bedrooms, stairways, bathrooms, and other feature walls. They can serve as elegant focal points in both contemporary and classic interiors, as butterflies are a creature common to all eras of time.

Currently, most of the demand for Butterfly mosaics is in hand-cut glass and Murano glass. However, depending upon your taste, budget and the rest of your decor, other materials may be used. These include marble, natural stone, or a combination of materials. Wood is another upcoming material being used for mosaic artistry.
