This was our second project with Elizabeth. We are proud to say that she was so happy with the shower wall mosaic that MEC had crafted for her that she decided to have her kitchen backsplash crafted by us too!

Our client had a pretty good idea of the pattern design that she wanted for her kitchen backsplash. A few adjustments were required with the background shades so everything could be in sync with the existing colour combinations in the kitchen.

Client Brief for a Custom Mosaic Kitchen Backsplash

Elizabeth approached us with some basic ideas of the pattern she wanted for her kitchen backsplash. She instantly fell in love with the design pattern options we presented to her.

Some changes, however, were required to the background colour of the glass mosaic tile backsplash to coordinate with the rest of her kitchen.

Our client shared pictures of the rest of the kitchen, particularly the cabinets, which were an oyster white shade.

As the backsplash was to be in the background of these cabinets, they needed to have coordinating colours. The colours that Elizabeth communicated to us included pearl, ivory or off-white.

She wanted the main motif to have bright, cheery colours to go with her bright, breezy house. The finalised colours included Blue, Teal, Orange, yellow, and Gold.

Inspiration Moodboard for the Floral Mosaic Backsplash

This procedure took somewhat less time in this particular project. As it was the second time round that MEC was creating for Elizabeth, our design team had an excellent idea of her style and taste.

The initial mood board designs were approved by her instantly with a few changes. She requested fewer motifs as the pattern was already quite big and bright. Hence, too much of that would have made the whole design look too busy and full.

Our client also requested that a particular motif be replaced with a butterfly.

Along with other bright colours, Gold was added subtly within the mix to give the whole handmade flower and bird mosaic design a more stately look.

Design Development

Bird and Flower Mosaic

Initial Moodboard

This was the easy part of the mosaic project, as Elizabeth liked the design pattern suggested by our designers and instantly approved it.

Bird and Flower Mosaic

Design Pattern Layout

While largely going with the design pattern that was created by our design team, our client requested a few changes. Bird motifs were added to the confection, and a few flower motifs were omitted to make the whole mosaic look less busy.

Shades & Material

The material of choice was hand-cut glass, which is currently trending due to its numerous qualities. The colours in the mosaic were kept the same as the design suggested. The background colour was changed from light yellowish to creamy white for it to sit better with the rest of the kitchen’s colour scheme.

How We Crafted This Floral Mosaic Backsplash

Behind the scenes of artisan craftsmanship:

We are glad to say that Elizabeth ‘absolutely loved’ the composition created by our team of expert artisans.

— MEC

As this was a second-time project with Elizabeth, our design team at MEC was well aware of her sense of style and taste.

Nada, our mosaic consultant, was in constant contact with Elizabeth throughout the crafting of her glass mosaic tile backsplash. All changes and additions requested by our client were duly made.

Though Elizabeth did love the original handmade glass mosaic backsplash design for her kitchen renovation, she required a few changes.

As the cabinetry in her kitchen was of a smoked oyster shade, she requested a background colour which would fit seamlessly with it. The original background was a yellowish-white, while she wanted something more creamy white.

Next, owing to the placement and number of cabinets, Elizabeth wanted to scratch out some of the flower motifs so that her custom flower and bird mosaic kitchen backsplash did not look too overcrowded or messy.

This, with a few other minor revisions, was communicated to Nada. Finally, our artisans got down to the task of the actual crafting that mosaic. Pictures of sections that were completed were shared with our client.

FAQs

Yes. Every mosaic created by MEC is specifically for that space, allowing you to choose floral motifs, colour ranges, and layouts that go with coastal interiors. Soft blues, seafoam greens, sandy neutrals, and crisp whites can be combined to create a light, elegant aesthetic inspired by the Texas coast. Colour choices are ultimately in the client’s hands.

They are, in fact, the very best option. High-quality glass mosaics are non-porous, resistant to moisture, stains, and fading, making them an excellent choice for coastal homes. When installed correctly, they retain their beauty and structural integrity even in humid conditions.

The time taken depends on the size of the mosaic, complexity, and level of customisation. Bespoke mosaics generally require several weeks for design development, hand-cut fabrication, and quality inspection, followed by professional installation. This careful process ensures a unique, solid artwork that enhances the kitchen for decades.

The artwork is crafted directly on mesh-mounted panels in the studio. During installation, these panels are carefully numbered, aligned and set on to the wall using premium setting materials to ensure the floral design appears continuous and perfectly integrated.
