There is something incredibly timeless about floral art in a home, which is probably why our collection of flower-inspired mosaics continues to grow.
Client Brief
Shawn approached MEC with a painting she loved and wanted transformed into a custom kitchen backsplash mosaic for her home in Georgia, USA.
The prominent pink tones in this mosaic immediately reminded us of a bespoke floral backsplash we created for a vanity room project, showing just how versatile a rose-hued palette can be.
The challenge of the project was scale. The backsplash area itself was relatively compact, but Shawn wanted the installation to retain the expressive movement and colorful personality of the original artwork.
Inspiration Moodboard
The goal was to create a backsplash that felt artistic and alive while still functioning naturally within the kitchen environment.
The inspiration came directly from the floral reference painting Shawn shared with our team.
The artwork featured:
- layered floral forms,
- warm yellows and oranges,
- soft greens and blues,
- and expressive pink and red roses that became the focal point of the final mosaic.
To preserve the painterly quality of the original artwork, we avoided rigid geometric layouts and instead used curved mosaic placement techniques that allowed the tesserae to flow naturally throughout the composition.
Iridescent glass tiles were also introduced into selected sections to reflect light and add dimensionality to the backsplash surface.
Design Development
Initial Sketches
During the design discussions, she specifically requested, more vivid color transitions, additional pink tones throughout the floral elements, a seamless integration into the surrounding backsplash area
2D & 3D Visualizations
One of the most important stages of the project was simplifying and translating the original painted forms into a workable mosaic composition without losing the emotion of the artwork.
Color Palette & Materials
During the review process, Shawn requested stronger pink tones throughout the flowers. In response, we revised the palette by introducing, richer rose shades, deeper magentas, and additional tonal layering within the petals.
Fabrication Photos
Having designed and crafted countless kitchen backsplash mosaics over the years, we approached this project with complete confidence in the final result.
Once the design was finalized, the mosaic was hand-assembled in our workshop tile by tile.
Because of the organic movement within the artwork, each section required careful placement to maintain smooth visual transitions between colors and shapes. The flowing background curves were especially important in preserving the painterly quality of the original inspiration piece.
The mosaic was fabricated into installation-ready sections that were mapped and prepared for international shipping to the United States.

As part of our standard process, MEC always includes spare tiles with projects to support smooth installation and future maintenance if needed.
Since Shawn specifically requested additional pink tiles, we also shipped extra pink tesserae separately to ensure complete flexibility during installation.
