History of Mosaic Backsplash

Mosaics are ancient; they were first made in Mesopotamia around 3000 BC. They were visible in pebble sculptures made in Tiryns. The floor of Mycenaean Greece was covered with mosaic art from ancient Greece and Rome.

In 200 BC, the Roman Empire employed mosaic tiles to produce enormous designs and artworks across large flooring. The tiny, vibrant tiles showed beautiful designs, gods, and daily life.

Using extraordinarily tiny glass mosaic tiles, the Byzantine Empire moved decorative finishing from the floors to the walls and ceilings to provide a rich theme for churches, palaces, and the dwellings of the highly affluent.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ravenna, Italy, has several exquisite specimens of the gold and silver-backed small tiles first preserved for religious structures.

Evolution of Mosaic Backsplash

Until quite recently, mosaic tiles were mainly used in creative projects. Even though simpler mosaic tile designs have become more common, the way traditional mosaic tiles have evolved in forms, colors, and functions offers incredible inspiration for the modern alternatives we frequently install in our homes today.

Though mosaic tile patterns were readily available throughout the 20th century, the 1950s saw a sharp rise in the demand for brightly colored contemporary backsplash mosaics.

After the war, many householders liberally placed little mosaic tiles in pink, green, and blue across the walls of their kitchens and bathrooms to fill their homes with a whimsical and joyful ambiance.

The unique and magnificent finish of contemporary mosaic tiles will always stay in style, even if natural marble and stone are expensive in many of our houses. The history of admirers of mosaic tiles is thousands of years.

Mosaic tiles can handle heat, making them great for making the kitchen and bathroom more durable. There will always be a trend for mosaic tiles because they are strong and can handle heat. Glass tiles are better than other materials that might fade or change color when heated because they are made to handle high temperatures.

Backsplashes made of mosaic tiles will look great for a long time, and their main job is to keep walls from getting damaged by heat.

Heat-resistant mosaic backsplashes are outstanding for the following reasons:

  • How It Works In The Kitchen: Kitchens are often heated by cooking appliances like stoves and ovens. So, heat-resistant mosaic tiles keep your things from getting damaged by heat. They don’t break, bend, or change color when exposed to high temperatures.
  • How Long They Last: Mosaic tiles made of glass, clay, or ceramic can handle heat just fine. Thus, the border stays in good shape over time, even if it’s near sources of high heat for almost a lifetime.
  • Easy To Clean And Maintain: Most heated-resistant tile tables are relatively easy to clean and maintain. They do well in kitchens used daily because they can handle being wiped down and cleaned with mild soaps or home cleaners.
  • More Safety: The border is safe to use near any heat source because it is made of materials that don’t catch fire. Thermal growth and shrinkage make things less likely to crack or break down, which gives homeowners peace of mind.

Your house will thank you for choosing mosaic backsplash because of these properties.

3- Mosaic Backsplash Are Easy To Maintain

  • Less Pores In Mosaic Backsplashes: Mosaic backsplashes are beautiful and easy to keep clean. Mosaic tile surfaces are smooth and don’t have pores, so they are easy to clean with light soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Mosaic backsplashes don’t need as much care as other materials requiring special cleaners or regular finishing.
  • Sturdiness In Mosaic Backsplash: Their sturdiness will last through standard wear and tear without losing shine.
  •  Small Grout Lines: Mosaic surfaces will be easier to clean because they have fewer grout lines than oversized tiles. This cuts down on the places where dirt and grime can gather, so less cleaning and upkeep are needed over time. If you use suitable grout that doesn’t stain, the backsplash will last longer and require less maintenance; you won’t have to dry and clean it as often as you regularly.

4- Mosaic Backsplash Is Fade-resistant.

Due to their fade-resistant qualities, mosaic tiles will always look beautiful in any home. Their bright colors and intricate designs will be stunning for years to come.

Spending more on things like marble or hand-painted tiles can make your home look more expensive. Ceramic and glass tiles are cheaper. They come in lots of different shapes and bright colors.

Putting up a mosaic wall in your kitchen or bathroom can improve the overall look and raise the resale value of your home without spending a lot of money.

Mosaic tiles are sometimes used to redecorate kitchens or bathrooms because they can be used for many different purposes. In the kitchen, they keep the walls clean and grease-free and add a focal point to the walls.

When these factors are taken into account, mosaic backsplashes may be a good option for a variety of budgets because they are both useful and beautiful.

7- Mosaic Backsplash Are Easy To Install

Both people who do mosaic backsplash installations and professionals love mosaic tiles because they look great and aren’t too hard to put in. The tiles are sometimes already stuck to mesh sheets. This makes installation much more accessible because more significant pieces can be put in at once instead of dealing with many small tiles.

This method guarantees a perfect, ongoing layout with the least time and work. Because the mesh sheets are flexible, cutting them to fit plugs, corners, and other bathroom or kitchen features is easy. Mosaic tiles are a stylish and easy choice for people who want to update their space with little work because they can match any design or style.

Putting up mosaics is easy for several reasons:

  • Meshed sheets that are already put together: Mosaic tiles are often placed on meshed sheets. This allows you to set many tiles simultaneously, which takes much less time and work than placing each separately.
  • Flexible sheets: Because they have a mesh backing, these sheets can be bent and easily cut and fitted around outlets, light switches, corners, and other irregularities, giving any area a smooth, professional look.
  • Even Spacing: Mesh sheets hold the tiles in place with a suitable space between them, making even grout lines. You don’t have to change them when you lay each tile, making that operation look better and more stable.
  • Uses of glue: Covering larger mesh sheets is easier than working with single tiles. It’s also easier and takes less time to install because the sheets are pressed into the glue in parts.
  • It’s easy for tiles to line up: with each other because mesh sheets come with a design already set up. This makes it impossible to make mistakes and ensures that the tiles are spaced correctly and in the correct order.
  • Mosaic sheets can be designed in many different ways: They come in a wide range of shapes and materials, making them even more helpful for creative and unique projects. This feature quickly adds the flexibility that gives something a high-end look and makes it easier to do without knowing much about how to install it.
  • Overall, mosaic tiles are like this because they come with pre-mounted mesh sheets, are very flexible, have equal spacing, are easy to stick down, and can be used in many different ways.
  • Mosaic Backsplash Are Eco-friendly: Mosaic backsplashes are eco-friendly and can be used again and again. Many mosaic tiles are made from recovered glass, clay, and tone. This keeps the natural resources needed to create new materials in good shape and reduces waste.
  • Most of the time, these tiles use less energy than other wall choices. Mosaic countertops are a beautiful and unique way to decorate, and people who choose them also choose to help protect the environment.
  • Mosaic Tiles In Case of Fire: Even if mosaic tile caught fire, it wouldn’t contain any Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or other harmful chemicals. Grouts and sealants cleared by GREENGUARD also have no or very few VOCs.
  • Reducing the Use of Chemicals With Mosaic Backsplash: The tile keeps the area mold-free because it is safe, kills germs, doesn’t gather dust or dirt, and doesn’t hold water. Warm water is all you need to clean ceramic tiles; you don’t need to use strong chemicals.
  • Energy Efficiency With Mosaic Backsplash: Mosaic tiles have a lot of heat mass. In other words, they can store heat energy and keep temperatures the same even when the weather changes. When the thermal mass number is high, it stays cool in hot places and warm in cold areas. Front and back LED lights can also be used to light up projects. They give Mosaic Tiles a beautiful, lasting look that doesn’t use much power.

Mosaic tiles will always be stylish and environmentally friendly for modern homes because they last a long time and look good in various styles. Artists have used tiles made from glass and Marble for a very long time. They work well, don’t cost much, and are easy to keep up. For eco-friendly floors, glass is the best choice because it looks great and lasts long.

Whimsical Waves: Osalli Mosaic Brings Color to a Virginia Home

Freshly installed Osalli mosaic by MEC on a bathroom wall niche in Virginia USA

We have a project called Osalli tile that is about a tile backsplash we made for a client. April found the Osalli tile while looking through an online catalog. She loved its fun design, which used light neutrals and cool colors that looked like the sea. She thought the 48″x48″ glass mosaic would be a great addition to her bathroom makeover, so she ordered it and asked if it would last in a humid bathroom. The artisans gave her confidence, so she went ahead with the buy.

As the artists started to work on the custom piece, they sent April behind-the-scenes pictures so she could see the mosaic come to life and make any last changes she wanted. Once it was finished, the mosaic was carefully sent off with a layer of protective glue to make it easy to put together. When the Osalli mosaic was put in a niche above her shower, it added a bright splash of color and texture, making her bathroom a peaceful and one-of-a-kind place where she can relax and have fun.
