A Pool Mosaic in the Swiss Alps: Heidi’s Scenic Alpine Poolside
Nestled high in the Alps, this story follows the creation of a stunning mosaic for Heidi’s outdoor pool. With green hills, majestic peaks, and soft clouds in the backdrop, it’s a design journey as breathtaking as the setting itself.
Sometimes, the setting does half the work for you. That was our thought when Heidi from Switzerland reached out for a mosaic design for her narrow outdoor pool. Nestled high in the Alps, her property offers a jaw-dropping panorama: green hills rolling into the distance, majestic mountains brushing against foggy clouds, and pine trees scattered across the landscape and in the distance. On clear days, the blue sky stretches endlessly, where soft, fluffy clouds hang gently in the sky, adding to the serene charm of the scene. Picture taking a dip with all of that around you—pure magic.
The Beginning of the Journey
While I wasn’t involved in the initial back-and-forth emails, I know this: Heidi shared her pool dimensions along with a few photos of the site, and our team jumped in to help her visualize the possibilities. We created a complimentary 3D render to show her a few abstract designs, sticking mostly to shades of blue—a classic choice for pools, especially ones set against nature’s vibrant greens and earthy tones.
One design struck a chord: an abstract composition with calming blue hues and a decorative motif at its center. Heidi liked it as it was but had one request: she wanted to see a few border options.
Finding the Perfect Border
Borders can make or break a design, so we presented three options: a bold gradient that played with varying shades of blue, a timeless Greek wave pattern, and a third, simpler choice. After some deliberation, Heidi picked the gradient—a seamless blend that added depth without overpowering the central design. It felt just right for the space.
From Concept to Creation
Once the design was finalized, the real work began. The mosaic was handcrafted using our PIXL technique, where each tiny glass tile was placed with care and precision. When the piece was fully laid out in our workshop, we sent Heidi a photo for her approval.
After the green light, we prepped the mosaic for its journey to Switzerland. The sheets were reinforced with mesh backing, carefully labeled for easy installation, and packed up for shipment. While we don’t have photos of this packing and shipping process, it’s always a meticulous effort to ensure everything arrives intact.
Installation and Transformation
Throughout the design process, we kept Sandy and Kari updated with renderings and adjustments. There was some back and forth about whether a support column would be needed and if the mosaic design should extend onto it. After an engineering consultation, Sandy decided to proceed without the column. However, after the backsplash was completed and installed, she later reconsidered, and we are now in the process of designing a mosaic for the columns as well.
A Design That Shifts With the Light
One of the joys of glass mosaic art is how it changes throughout the day. In the morning light, the colors looked crisp and vibrant. By midday, with the sun high in the sky, the tiles shimmered under the water’s surface. As the day turned to evening, the design softened, reflecting the moody hues of the setting sun and the surrounding landscape.
A Mosaic Worth Remembering
Heidi’s pool is more than just a place to swim; it’s a piece of art that perfectly complements the stunning Alpine backdrop. From concept to completion, it was a project that reminded us why we love what we do. The interplay of design, craftsmanship, and nature created something truly special—a place where anyone would dream of taking a dip.
Take a look at the photos to see the mosaic’s journey: from digital concepts to workshop layouts, on-site installation, and finally, the breathtaking finished pool. It’s a testament to how thoughtful design and beautiful surroundings can come together to create something unforgettable.
