In the Quiet of Blue: A Bespoke Mosaic for a San Francisco Retreat

Our newest blue-scale mural suggests that the most profound architectural statements aren't built with beams, but assembled, piece by piece, into a landscape that feels older than the house itself.

“This project was about capturing the soul of San Francisco—the landscape, the history, and that specific ‘Blue Hour’ light—and freezing it in glass.”

We recently completed a signature installation for a stunning private residence in San Francisco. The goal was to create a “window” into an idealized version of the city’s heritage.

Working with a homeowner who deeply appreciates the historic architecture of the West Coast, we developed a narrative that feels like a dreamscape: Victorian-era storefronts and libraries nestled against the backdrop of rolling, misty mountains.

Client Brief

The client wanted a piece that felt “inherited” rather than brand new. They requested a design that moved away from high-contrast pop art and instead embraced:

  1. A Monochromatic Blue Symphony: Utilizing various shades of cobalt, azure, and teal to create depth.
  2. Architectural Accuracy: Detailed renderings of historic San Francisco facades, including a “Library” and the iconic “J.H. Eller Hardware” storefront.
  3. Natural Integration: Incorporating lush, stylized greenery and equestrian elements to give the urban scene a park-like, serene atmosphere.

Inspiration Moodboard

As you stand before the mural, your eyes are immediately drawn to the hand-cut horses in the foreground. Their movement guides you through a captivating journey—from the detailed stonework of the buildings to the shimmering gold-toned “fog” that breaks through the mountain peaks.

Key highlights of this mosaic include:

  • The Golden “Aurelian” Sky: We used iridescent gold glass to mimic the sun breaking through the SF mist, adding a warm glow that changes as you walk past.
  • Textural Contrast: The buildings use precise, grid-aligned tiles to represent brick and mortar, while the trees and mountains utilize “Andamento” (the flow of tiles) to create organic, swirling textures.
  • Historical Homage: The signage for “J.H. Eller Hardware” was  crafted with tiny black and white tesserae to ensure the typography remained legible and authentic to the era.

We used over 40 shades of blue to ensure the “blue-on-blue” look didn’t lose its definition.

Design Development

Initial Sketches

The process began with a highly detailed Digital Drawing. This allowed the client to approve the composition and the specific shade of “San Francisco Blue” before a single tile was cut.

2D & 3D Visualizations

Once the digital blueprint was set, our artisans took over. In the Fabrication phase, every single horse’s mane and every architectural window was hand-placed.

Color Palette & Materials

You can see in the workshop photos how we use specialized tools to “nip” the glass into slivers for the horse’s bridle and the library’s intricate cornices.

Fabrication Photos

Behind the scenes of artisan craftsmanship:

“Seeing the photos from the workshop was incredible – I could immediately feel the care and precision in every tile. I can’t wait to see the mural installed; it already feels like it’s going to transform the space.”

— Homeowner

When the light hits the Iridium glass, the mural comes alive. It’s an architectural upgrade that reflects the heritage of San Francisco. Unlike paint or wallpaper, this glass installation is a “permanent art piece” that will retain its color and brilliance for decades to come.

Final Installed Photos

“”Going with a monochrome blue palette was a bit of a gamble, but we loved the idea of showing how depth and movement could emerge from a single color”

— Design Team

we provided detailed remote installation guidance to ensure the mural was assembled exactly as intended. Our team shared step-by-step instructions, annotated diagrams, and real-time video support to guide local installers. This approach allowed us to maintain the precision and alignment of each tile, even from afar.

By combining careful planning with remote support, we brought the mural to life no matter where it was being installed.

FAQs

We use specialized crates and a “section-mapping” system so your local contractor can install it like a high-end puzzle.

Absolutely. Every project is “Bespoke,” meaning we can shift this entire blue palette to greens, earth tones, or full color.

Depending on the materials chosen, mosaics can be adapted for exterior installation. Proper adhesives and finishes are used to withstand weather while preserving color and texture.

The timeline varies by size, complexity, and customization. For this project, design, fabrication, and planning took several months from concept to installation.
