A Mosaic in Belize—Bringing Geoff McFetridge’s Art to Life in Glass Tiles

A striking design, a pixel-perfect mosaic, and a quest for the right shades of blue—this project in Belize, inspired by artist Geoff McFetridge’s artwork, was all about precision, patience, and getting every tile just right, from a resort guest’s vision to a custom-tiled pool.

Belize, a Scenic Central American Gem

Belize is known for its lush rainforests, clear blue waters, and a mix of cultural influences from the Maya, Creole, and Garifuna communities. It’s home to some of the most stunning landscapes in Central America, from the barrier reef to the dense jungles and mountain reserves. Among its hidden gems is Blancaneaux Lodge, a luxurious retreat owned by Francis Ford Coppola. Tucked away in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, it offers guests a chance to disconnect and experience nature in its purest form. Martin Krediet, who runs Coppola’s resorts, has lived in Belize for years, immersing himself in its beauty and culture.

A Unique Collaboration – Geoff McFetridge Artwork

Geoff McFetridge, a celebrated artist and designer from Canada, is known for his clean, thought-provoking graphics. His work spans various mediums, from paintings and murals to collaborations with top brands. One of his artistic journeys led him to Blancaneaux Lodge, where he was a guest and met Martin. During his stay, Geoff shared a design that resonated with Martin—so much so that when Martin was looking to create a mosaic for his own pool in Belize, he decided this artwork would be the perfect fit.

The PIXL Mosaic Process – Precision Meets Creativity

Martin chose PIXL mosaic for this project, even though hand-cut mosaic was an option. PIXL mosaics, like their namesake pixels, create larger images from small square tiles arranged in a grid. The process starts with the AddTek software, which analyzes the artwork and selects the best colors from our Vertex glass tile library. There’s still room for manual adjustments, allowing us to fine-tune the digital pattern before production begins. Once the design is finalized, smart LED backlit grid panels ensure each tile is placed precisely, making the fabrication process efficient and accurate.

Fine-Tuning the Colors

We initially prepared a tile color mood board and got it approved. But once production started and we shared photos with Martin, he noticed that some of the blues were too close in shade and blended together visually. We tested a few different options—one was too dark, another wasn’t quite the right tone. To ensure perfection, we created small test patches, tweaking the shades until we found the ideal combination. This flexibility is what sets MEC apart. There’s room for revisions at every stage—design, production, and even final approvals. And unlike many, we don’t charge for these revisions because our goal is to deliver a mosaic our clients are truly excited about.

A Perfect Fit

Once the final color palette was locked in, we completed production and prepared the mosaic for shipment. It was carefully packed for transport—first to Florida, then via local shipping to Belize. Martin was delighted with the final result and even offered to share some drone shots of the finished pool and its surroundings.

Stay tuned for those images—they’ll be worth the wait. A vibrant piece of art, set against the stunning Belizean landscape, bringing together the worlds of design, craftsmanship, and nature in the most effortless way.

Geoff McFetridge’s tileable design, inspired by synchronized swimmers, was the perfect fit for Martin’s vision in Belize, turning into a striking mosaic. If you’re ready to create your own one-of-a-kind mosaic with a seamless flow, we’re here to help. Get in touch with us and let’s make it happen!
