Mosaic Borders & Calligraphy Elevation

The front elevation of a religious building feature multi-layered rectangular arches. The architect had planned to add color and texture to the modern entrance arches and mosaic tile was on of the shortlisted options. This is where MEC’s mosaic expertise came in. We proposed several design options based on the inspiration images and color palette preference shared by the client. Eventually six of these were finalized. It features a pleasant mix of Kufic calligraphy grid mosaic, custom color blends (random mixing) and Arabic and Moroccan tile patterns. This building is situated in a university in Lahore, Pakistan.

Nested Architectural Frames

The entrance is composed of multiple rectangular frames arranged in a stepped sequence. Each frame is slightly smaller than the one before, producing a compelling sense of depth and architectural drama.

Crisp Geometric Bordering

Every frame is decorated with its own mosaic border, featuring a mix of:

• Kufic-inspired linear patterns in deep teal and black

• Diamond and star motifs in turquoise and white

• Classic interlace patterns in muted sand tones

This alternation of motifs adds visual rhythm and cultural richness.

Calming Desert-Inspired Color Palette

The use of beige, cream, soft aqua, and rich teal mirrors natural tones found in sand, sky, and sea—balancing warmth with cool serenity.

Symmetrical Central Entry

A black-framed glass doorway anchors the composition, flanked by two window panels. This minimalist center balances the ornate mosaic work surrounding it.

Expansive Forecourt

The wide, stone-paved foreground enhances the monumentality of the entrance, providing a clean, open space that complements the portal’s complexity.

Hand-Laid Mosaic Tiles

Each geometric border is constructed from precision-cut tesserae, ensuring crisp lines and accurately executed motifs.

High-Grade Ceramic & Glass Tiles

Durable, UV-stable materials maintain color vibrancy and withstand exterior climatic conditions.

Stone-Clad Structural Elements

The frames and surrounding wall are built with smooth stone or high-quality plaster, providing a neutral canvas for the decorative mosaic panels.

Laser-Cut Door & Window Components

The black metal framing of the entrance doors adds a contemporary touch, blending modern design with traditional ornamentation.
