Bespoke Mosaic Backsplash for Tea Room in Nassau, Bahamas

With every revision, Saskia’s tea room wall design blossomed into a vivid, one-of-a-kind mosaic — a blend of nature, geometry, and creativity.

Imagine stepping into a tea room nestled within a Bahamian museum, where art and nature converge in a breathtaking mosaic accent wall that has already transformed the space. Created in collaboration with Saskia D’Aguilar of the D’Aguilar Art Foundation, this vibrant installation reflects the island’s rich flora and culture, turning the kitchen area into a canvas of color and creativity.

With every tile carefully placed, this mosaic serves not just as a kitchen backdrop but as an expression of community spirit and personal passion—making each moment spent here feel more wholesome and meaningful.

The Tea Room Accent Wall Backsplash Concept

The mosaic was designed for an expansive wall, 18 feet wide, featuring a 48-inch wide window centrally placed. Along this same wall, lower kitchen cabinets—36 inches high—would frame a large farmhouse sink and countertops. Saskia’s goal was to create a bold focal point that seamlessly combined beauty with functionality, turning the mosaic into a dual-purpose backsplash.

Design InspirationsHow it Started

Saskia came to us with a clear idea: she wanted to incorporate the symmetry and grace of a trellis design. Though she initially liked the Venezia Leaf Mosaic for its nature-inspired pattern, it lacked the structure she imagined. Saskia envisioned a design that moved away from straight lines. She wanted a more organic feel that echoed the curves found in her fabric print. This fabric inspiration featured flowing, curved designs with a rich color palette, including vibrant greens, deep pinks, and sunny oranges—perfect for bringing the energy of the tropics into her home.

The fabric inspiration was our starting point, but Saskia’s hands-on involvement took the design further. She worked closely with us on adjusting the size and placement of the flowers, settling on two shades of green for the trellis. Her vision shaped each decision—this was truly her mosaic.

In her design, Saskia specifically wanted to replace ivy-like leaves with those resembling the native Hibiscus flower, creating a connection to the vibrant flora of the Bahamas.

However, after some thoughtful revisions, we evolved the design further. Ultimately, we decided to simplify the leaf shapes and opted for a lighter color, creating a more cohesive look that complemented the overall composition.

Design EvolutionA Collaborative Journey

Throughout the project, Saskia’s passion for art and keen attention to detail were evident in every choice made. She actively participated in selecting the ideal shades and arrangements, ensuring the final piece truly reflected her artistic spirit. Her vision culminated in a stunning mosaic featuring Hibiscus flowers intertwined with elegant geometric patterns.

Serving as both an accent wall and backsplash, the mosaic behind the farmhouse sink beautifully balances style and practicality. Its bold, curvy lines in two shades of green, complemented by vibrant pink and orange flowers, capture the essence of the tropical landscape while creating an inviting atmosphere.
